AS - After School Programs. District middle schools receive local, state and federal funding for before- and after-school activities. Instruction beyond the school day is key to pulling students up to grade level and helping them meet academic standards. In addition, community-based organizations such as the YMCA provide enrichment/recreational activies that range from weight training and dance to leadership development and computer skill-building.

BL - Block schedule. Extended class periods on alternate days, i.e. periods 1,3,5 one day, 2,4,6 the next.

IB - International Baccalaureate. IB course curriculum covers subjects traditionally taught at universities. IB students take extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, action and service courses. IB courses are offered at Bonita Vista High and Castle Park High.

21 - Twenty-First Century High Schools. Before and after school programs are funded by the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant. The seven Sweetwater District high school sites include: Castle Park High, Chula Vista High, Mar Vista High, Montgomery High, San Ysidro High, Southwest High and Sweetwater High.

With a rigorous lineup of International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses, BVH provides a challenging academic environment supplemented by engaging athletic and extra-curricular activities. Students also can pursue career courses in automotive technology and information technology. The Baron's award-winning show choir Music Machine, Club Blue Band and Color Guard compete and provide entertainment at hundreds of events each year.

Bonita Vista Middle School, where we "Prepare Tomorrow's Leaders," has many opportunities for students to realize their potential. They include a strong core and elective academic program, Associated Student Body, Knowledge Bowl, Science Fair, Math Field Day, Academic Support Classes, Counseling Support Groups, Tutoring, Peer Mediation, AVID and Intramural sports. A Pre-Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate program helps students prepare for the rigors of those classes in high school. These programs, in conjunction with highly dedicated and talented staff, help ensure all students maximize their middle school experience.

Castle Park High School

One of only two district high schools with an International Baccalaureate course sequence, CPH challenges and stimulates students through high quality educational offerings. In addition to a strong band and mariachi program, the school develops student career interests through its School of Business Leadership and health career pathways. A new joint project with UCSD - BioBridge - allows students to immerse themselves in biotechnology.

Castle Park Middle School

The school provides a rich, standards-based curriculum integrated with an accelerated middle years program. Science teachers and music teachers have been honored as "Teachers of the Year," and other faculty members have been recognized for excellence in teaching and coaching of peers. The Marching Knights band, drill team and letterettes draw rave reviews, as does the student mariachi performance group.

CVH focuses on the five A's of Spartan Excellence: Attitude, Athletics, Academics, Artistry and Attendance, and 30 percent of the student population is enrolled in the School for Creative and Performing Arts. The Biotechnology Program connects students with local businesses that help build pathways for students to become scientists and doctors. The Media Arts pathway and the Stage Production and Technology pathway also provide students the career and technical preparation necessary for these competitive fields.

Vibrant performances are a hallmark of CVM's preparatory courses in the Creative and Performing Arts, which feed into Chula Vista High. CVM students are well-rounded. The school?s Academic Performance Index increased by 223 points between 1999 and 2007, the highest among all Chula Vista-area middle schools. As one of the first schools to receive new classrooms because of Proposition BB funding, CVM offers comprehensive programs to meet the needs of gifted, special education and bilingual students. The before/after school "Club TC" program is one of the most successful in the South Bay.

ELH is actively supported by the EastLake Education Foundation and shares its library and sports facilities with the City of Chula Vista. Titans can choose from rigorous academic/career pathways in health sciences, business and marketing and pre-engineering. The school's pre-engineering program earned the school a Golden Bell for innovation from the California School Boards Association.

Among the district's newest schools, ELM has quickly assumed a role as a leader in academic achievement. While student results on state-wide exams place the school among the district's top performers, an ability to apply that knowledge has earned ELM students individual, as well as site, ribbons in both the district and county Math Field Day, Knowledge Bowl and music competitions. A dedicated staff, tutoring programs , and strong community and parental involvement assure ELM will continue to be a place of learning and success. ELM is also grateful for the generous support of the EastLake Educational Foundation (EEF).

Granger Junior High School

GJH students are achieving at higher and higher levels. GJH 2007 graduates were the first to have all taken Algebra or Geometry. The "Griffin Times" newspaper routinely takes top awards at the San Diego County Fair. GJH has another award-winning program: student-led parent conferences that allow students to take center stage as they display portfolios of their work. Efforts to keep these successful students physically active will continue with a Chargers Champions grant-funded fitness center.

HTH has earned its reputation for rigor through the continued academic success of its students. Hilltop's four-year high school programs in Hospitality and Tourism, Information Technology and Foreign Language and Global Studies develop student interest and provide career exploration through an innovative "school-within-a-school" concept. Completion of the program of study prepares students for post secondary education and provides a solid foundation for entry into the career field.

Students in HTM's competitive Foreign Language and Global Studies (FLAGS) program take a foreign language class each year along with other accelerated classes that combine foreign language study with cultural lessons about the language origins. Hilltop also offers the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) program, a middle school transition program where 8th graders mentor 7th graders. WEB student leaders help younger students discover what it takes to be successful in middle school.

Mar Vista High School

Only minutes from the Pacific Ocean in Imperial Beach, MVH is the most southwesterly high school in the United States. Award-winning programs include Navy Junior ROTC, the Crossroads freshman transition course, the Poseidon Academy and the Maritime Academy career pathways. The Maritime Academy provides merchant mariner training to students, qualifying them to work on merchant ships or Military Sealift Command ships directly from high school. The Poseidon Academy prepares students for careers in marine science. MVH also offers a Stage Production & Technology course sequence, expanding student possibilities in the arts.

The school Literacy Program is a book lover's delight and a campus tradition that earned a Golden Bell Award for innovation from the California School Boards Association. Each year, MVM faculty members develop cross-curricular activities drawn from a common school-wide book such as "Things Not Seen" -a California Young Reader Medal Book of the Year. The school's After School Activities Program also has been widely recognized and boasts an array of academic and personal enrichment offerings.

Innovation is part of the MOH culture. Students can choose from two well-established career pathways - the KMMI (Montgomery Media Institute), and AOJ (Administration of Justice) - or two emerging pathways - construction and pre-engineering. In addition to its emphasis on high school and college preparatory curriculum, NCM offers various extra-curricular activities in the areas of academics, visual arts, performing arts and athletics. Students attend NCM’s tutoring center and computer lab to get academic support before and after school. A Chargers Champion grant award helped equip the school’s new fitness center. A partnership with UCSD brings several medical residents to the school every week to work with STAR program students.

OLH opened August 7, 2006 with a vision of integrating technology with college readiness for all students. Besides a strong core curriculum and AP Program, Olympian has opened two career pathways in the areas of Information Technology, which includes multi-media, web design, and incorporates a state-of-the art recording studio, and in Health Science, which features curriculum in both clinical and sports medicine. Olympian High School has also implemented a coherent school-wide academic literacy plan to ensure all students systematically develop the skills necessary to succeed in college and/or the world of work.

Otay Ranch High School

School-to-career programs are flourishing at ORH. Established programs in Criminology and Justice and Media Arts encourage students to gain real-world preparation with an increased academic focus. A new obstacle course has strengthened ties to the Chula Vista Police Department, whose officers help teach in the criminology program. Empowering students to see the potential for immediate and future success in an interesting career field is the goal for these career technical education programs.

RDM continues to receive state recognition. A two-time California Distinguished School award recipient, the school’s Human Performance and Well-Being program also earned a Golden Bell Award for its two-year course that combines health and physical education classes. The school is also launching a dual-language curriculum to help students master Spanish. Its non-core course offerings include visual and performing arts and technology that provide an interdisciplinary, standards-based curriculum.

SYH graduated its first senior class in June 2006. The school offers Project Lead the Way, a career-technical education program in engineering design. Additional specialized programs in media arts, media support and business technology, veterinary medicine, Navy Junior ROTC and business and finance provide students with exciting choices. The school is also home to the English Language Learner Newcomer Program, a pilot program being tested by the district. More than 60% of SYH students participate in single gender classes and all students wear school uniforms.

SOH has a solid reputation for excelling in county-wide competitions such as the Academic Decathlon. The campus has been a National Demonstration School for the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program, which helped to increase the number of students attending four-year colleges. The Health Science academy has spurred students’ interest in medical-related careers. SOH also offers career pathway programs in automotive technology, culinary arts and pre-engineering.

Southwest Middle School

SOM is located three miles from the U.S. international border with Mexico in southern San Diego. It is the only middle school in the district to be named a national AVID Demonstration School for its efforts to provide students college-going skills. A long-running dual language program helps students become bilingual in English and Spanish. Collaborative partnerships with university, parent and community groups are reflected in the school’s successful after-school program.

Sweetwater High School

As the only high school in National City, SUH is rich in tradition with a strong alumni network that turns out in large numbers to support school events. A wide-range of academic programs help the current generation of Red Devils find academic and personal success. A model Careers in Health Science program has spurred student interest in the medical profession and resulted in the addition of a Veterinary Assistant program. Students with interests in welding technology and others looking to enter the education field also receive important preparation and experience in popular career pathway programs. Sweetwater is home to an award-winning Marine Corps Junior ROTC Program.

Community Charter School

MAC serves students from grade 9 through age 24. Each of its vocational pathways—Multi-Media Technology and Early Childhood Education—give students the opportunity to explore career paths while they are still in high school. The Stone Worx program was developed in collaboration with YouthBuild and a local company, Custom Cast Stone. A factory/workshop provides students a professional setting to learn the skill of mold making, casting and staining cast stone to create outstanding quality products. Stone Worx also allows students to earn an hourly wage through the program, which gives them the security of a steady paying job.

Sweetwater Academy for Individual Learning Styles (SAILS)

OSS provides flexible classroom learning environments and uses alternative instruction methods to maximize student performance. A focus is placed on real-world academic applications and motivation to help students complete their high school graduation requirements. Students may work with a facilitator to pace their academic performance.

Palomar High School

PAH is a state-designated Model Continuation High School designed to meet the needs of students who have faced challenges while attending traditional high schools in the district. The campus hosts the Scripps Palomar Family Practice Residency Clinic, a valuable resource for students and their families. Scripps medical interns provide clinic office hours several times a week.

Learning Centers

The Sweetwater District offers the opportunity to fulfill high school graduation requirements at Learning Centers located on campuses across the district. Offering traditional classroom settings, independent study or accelerated instruction helps the Sweetwater District meet the diverse educational needs of its students. Learning Center students work independently on course packets, then meet with instructors once or twice a week to review progress and course work. Learning Center education can help students who have failed to meet course requirements get back on track to join traditional school environments or meet graduation requirements early.

Adult Schools

The learning never stops at Sweetwater’s Adult Education Division. The division serves more than 32,000 learners at five major adult school campuses-Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City, Montgomery and San Ysidro. Classes also meet at convenient locations such as elementary, middle and high schools, and libraries. Courses are offered under nine major program areas through worker-friendly class schedules in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. Such courses include:
