Sweetwater School District Appoints Permanent Superintendent

Dr. Karen Janney named in unanimous decision

In a closed session on June 8, 2015, the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees selected Dr. Karen Janney to be the permanent Superintendent.

The trustees will vote on a contract for Dr. Janney at the regularly scheduled meeting on June 22, 2015 at which time she will officially begin in the new role. In the interim, Mr. Phil Stover will remain at Sweetwater to assist in the transition of the new superintendent.

Dr. Janney is a former Assistant Superintendent and Principal in the Sweetwater District who most recently has served as an Executive Coach for the National Center for Urban School Transformation and as a Lecturer and Supervisor in the San Diego State University Educational Leadership Department.

The search for the permanent superintendent was done by the Cosca Group, who was selected by the Board of Trustees in March. The Board of Trustees received 19 applications and narrowed the search down to five candidates who were interviewed for the position.

The Sweetwater Union High School District serves approximately 41,000 students in grades 7-12 and over 22,000 adult education students in the South County of San Diego. The Sweetwater District is the largest secondary district in the State of California.
