Dear Parents and Guardians of Sweetwater 12th graders:

Over the past several years, the Sweetwater Union High School District has implemented a 1-to-1 device program that provided either an iPad or a laptop computer to each student. In the 2018-19 school year we were able to provide devices to every student in the district. However, with each year of implementation we also encountered numerous challenges and learnings, including devices either not being returned or being returned with significant damages.

As a result, we will not immediately distribute laptop devices to our 2019-20 senior class. Our middle school devices are sufficient for the year, however for the high school devices, we have too many damaged and unreturned devices to provide every student a device for the start of the school year.

We understand this will impact our senior students, teachers, and our community. To address the situation with the senior class, we have developed multiple solutions. First, we plan to allocate a pool of approximately 1,400 available laptops across our high school sites. In addition, this pooled device program can be complemented with school site carts (COWS – computer on wheels) and labs that provide approximately 3,000 additional devices, allocating these devices for senior student use as needed. Finally, we have worked to ensure that actual textbooks will be available in all courses for seniors as needed. As we remediate and repair our damaged device inventory this year, we will distribute these devices as priority to the senior class.

In addition to these solutions, the district will be looking into other options that will allow us to provide needed technology into the hands of our senior students. More information about this will be made available during the school year.
