Notice of Data Breach

Sweetwater Union High School District (the “District”) experienced an incident involving unauthorized access to some of its computer systems. This notice explains the incident, measures we have taken, and additional steps you may consider taking in response.

What Happened?

We identified a security incident which impacted the availability and functionality of our computer systems on February 12, 2023. We immediately began to investigate, notified law enforcement, and engaged a cybersecurity firm to help address the incident and restore operations. The investigation determined that an unauthorized person gained access to SUHSD’s computer network.

What Information Was Involved?

Findings from our investigation indicate that between February 11, 2023 and February 12, 2023, the unauthorized party took some files from our network. We reviewed the files that may have been taken and on May 12, 2023, unfortunately, we determined some personal information of current and former employees, dependents, students, families and others who provided information to the District was included in the potentially taken files.

What We Are Doing

We want to assure you that we take this very seriously. To prevent something like this from happening again, we have implemented additional safeguards and technical security measures, including multi-factor authentication, to further protect our data.

What You Can Do

While we have no evidence that anyone’s information has been misused, it is always advisable to remain vigilant to the possibility of fraud by reviewing your credit reports and financial account statements for unauthorized activity. You should immediately report any suspicious activity to the appropriate financial institution or agency. If you believe you may have been affected by this incident but have not received a letter by June 26, 2023, please call 1-844-357-4942.
