Granger Junior High Science Teacher One of Five Educators Surprised This Week With the News
Congratulations to Miguel Marin, Science Teacher at Granger Junior High one of five educators named San Diego County Teacher of the Year this week, recognizing the difference they make in the lives of students.
The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and Cox Communications collaborated to surprise the teachers in their classroom or as part of an assembly as part of the 35th annual Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers program.
Marin is a 7th and 8th grade science teacher who has 18 years of experience in the classroom. He is more than an educator; he is a role model who shows students that success is possible for everyone, no matter their background. He sets high expectations not as a barrier, but as a promise that they are capable of greatness, and he matches those expectations with unwavering support.
“Being named San Diego County Teacher of the Year is a remarkable achievement that reflects Mr. Marin’s unwavering commitment to our students and the transformative impact of his teaching,” said Dr. Moises G. Aguirre, Sweetwater District Superintendent. “We are incredibly proud to have him as part of our district, and we look forward to seeing the continued positive influence he will have on future generations.”
The first thing you will notice about Marin’s classroom is him standing at the door to greet each student, initiating small conversations like, “How did your softball game go?” or “That’s a nice new backpack accessory!” His commitment to establishing human connections is evident from the very start—before content, grades, or homework come into play.
He firmly believes that the most important aspect of education is the person. Throughout his teaching career, Marin has learned that building rapport with students is paramount to their success. Time and again, students express that they find learning in his classroom to be “easy.” This isn’t because he teaches an easy subject; it’s because he invests the time to ensure that each student feels “seen.” This sense of connection fosters comfort and eagerness to learn.
