Dear Sweetwater Community,
We stand in solidarity with our neighbors, public agencies, elected officials, and community organizations in response to the unacceptable treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla by federal agents in Los Angeles. This incident does not reflect the values we hold as Americans, and we unequivocally denounce it.
We recognize the growing concern about immigration enforcement in our South Bay community. The Sweetwater Union High School District remains committed to supporting and respecting our Latino and immigrant communities. With a student population that is 70% Latino and 10% Filipino, we take pride in our binational identity and the richness it brings to our schools.
Sweetwater does not collect or maintain immigration status information. Our board policies and administrative regulations ensure staff are equipped to handle these matters with care. Our top priority is to maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for every student.
Living along the border gives us a unique understanding: we can uphold law and order while also demanding empathy in enforcement. Every person deserves dignity, and we call on all who enforce the law to do so with compassion.
To those who choose to protest, we urge peaceful assembly, inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, who showed that nonviolence leads to lasting change.
Let us continue to build a community rooted in unity, diversity, and our shared commitment to justice. Together, we can rise to the challenge and uphold the democratic values that define us.

Este incidente no refleja los valores que sostenemos como estadounidenses, y lo condenamos de manera inequívoca.
Reconocemos la creciente preocupación sobre la aplicación de leyes migratorias en nuestra comunidad del South Bay. El Distrito Escolar Sweetwater Union High reafirma su compromiso de apoyar y respetar a nuestras comunidades latinas e inmigrantes. Con una población estudiantil compuesta en un 70% por estudiantes latinos y un 10% por estudiantes filipinos, nos enorgullece nuestra identidad binacional y la riqueza que aporta a nuestras escuelas.
Sweetwater no recopila ni mantiene información sobre el estatus migratorio. Dear Sweetwater Community,
As a district that proudly serves a diverse student population, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environments for every student—regardless of immigration status.
In light of recent national developments, we want to reassure our community that our district policies strictly prohibit immigration enforcement on school campuses without a valid judicial warrant. We are also committed to protecting the confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with the law.
All school staff have been reminded of the proper procedures to follow should immigration or law enforcement officials come to a school site. Additionally, schools have access to resources such as “Know Your Rights” materials and legal support contacts to help guide and protect families. Each school will also receive “Red Cards” in English and Spanish, provided by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, which outline Constitutional rights in an easy-to-understand format. En nuestro distrito, estamos orgullosos de servir a una población estudiantil muy diversa. Por eso, seguimos comprometidos en crear ambientes seguros, acogedores e inclusivos para todos nuestros estudiantes, sin importar su estatus migratorio.
Ante los eventos recientes a nivel nacional, queremos asegurarles que nuestras reglas no permiten que oficiales de inmigración entren a las escuelas sin una orden judicial válida. También cuidamos mucho la privacidad de la información de nuestros estudiantes y sus familias, como lo exige la ley.
El personal escolar ya recibió recordatorios sobre los pasos correctos a seguir si un oficial de inmigración o la policía llega a una escuela. Además, las escuelas tienen acceso a recursos como materiales de “Conozca sus Derechos” y contactos legales para ayudar a las familias. También entregaremos a cada escuela “Tarjetas Rojas” en inglés y español, proporcionadas por el Immigrant Legal Resource Center. Dear SUHSD Students, Staff, and Families:
Over the past several days, we have witnessed an escalation in tensions and violence in the Middle East, particularly in Israel, and the Gaza Strip. We understand that these events can elicit strong emotions and diverse perspectives within our community.
Sweetwater Union High School District is committed to upholding values of inclusivity, empathy, and respect for all members of our diverse community. It is imperative that we maintain an environment that is safe, welcoming, and supportive for all, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or nationalities. We unequivocally condemn any form of hate, discrimination, or prejudice, including antisemitism, or any other manifestation of discrimination targeted at individuals or groups.
As the violence in the Middle East continues to escalate, we recognize there are growing concerns around safety in our schools and communities. Some media outlets have reported that a former Hamas leader has called for a “Day of Jihad” around the world on Friday, October 13, 2023. There are other reported calls for a day of “general mobilization” and mass demonstrations. Law enforcement is not aware of any calls for action in San Diego County.
The San Diego County Office of Education recently shared and continues to update resources for educators and families to discuss the war in Israel and Gaza with students. These resources are intended to provide access to information, and we encourage you to determine which ones are most appropriate for your student. We will continue to maintain contact with local law enforcement partners, monitor campuses, and share safety updates with you.
Sweetwater Union High School District schools will be open tomorrow, Friday, October 13, 2023, and we are committed to ensuring a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for our students. In these challenging times, we believe it is our duty to uphold our core values and support all members of our community. Together, we can work toward a more peaceful and inclusive world where understanding and empathy prevail over hatred and division.

En los últimos días hemos sido testigos de una escalada de las tensiones y violencia en el Medio Oriente, particularmente en Israel y la Franja de Gaza. Entendemos que estos eventos pueden provocar emociones fuertes y perspectivas diversas dentro de nuestra comunidad.
El Distrito Escolar Secundario Sweetwater está comprometido a defender los valores de inclusión, empatía y respeto para todos los miembros de nuestra diversa comunidad. Es importante que mantengamos escuelas seguras y de apoyo para todos, independientemente de sus orígenes, creencias o nacionalidades. Condenamos inequívocamente cualquier forma de odio, discriminación o prejuicio, incluyendo el antisemitismo, o cualquier otra manifestación de discriminación dirigida a individuos o grupos.

Public Notice
Provisions of the California Government Code requires that public school employers and exclusive representatives present their initial proposals which relate to matter withing the scope of representation at a public meeting of this public school employer prior to commencing negotiations. The District commenced reopener bargaining on April 10, 2023, with the Sweetwater Education Association related to Wages, Benefits, Class Size, Special Education, Alternative Education, Transfer article changes, as called for under the successor agreement.
California Government Code Section 3547(d) requires that when a previously unnoticed article is presented, public notice must be given within twenty-four (24) hours of the article’s introduction. Pursuant to said Code provision, the District hereby provides notice that the parties discussed at their September 13, 2023, bargaining meeting the intent to modify the following Article that were previously not sunshined or noticed in the successor agreement language, held at the South County Teachers United at 1061 Tierra del Rey, Chula Vista, CA 91910: Savings/Miscellaneous Provisions, for the purpose of modifying the article to reflect the informal agreement that has existed between the two parties regarding the printing of the SEA contract.
