The San Diego County School Boards Association and the Association of California School Administrators Region 18 recently hosted the 23rd Annual Evening of the Stars Awards Reception and Dinner at the beautiful Sheraton Resort and Marina in downtown San Diego. This wonderful event celebrated the outstanding achievements of educators and administrators who have made significant contributions to our schools and communities.

Among the honorees was Dr. Jay Marquand, who was recognized as the State Regional Adult Education Administrator of the Year. As the Director of Adult Education, Dr. Marquand has positively impacted over 10,000 students enrolled in one of California’s largest adult education programs. His dedication and professionalism have fostered a collaborative environment, driving a unified sense of purpose among staff. Under his leadership, the adult division has launched several initiatives, including a comprehensive long-term strategic plan, professional development opportunities for staff, and the integration of innovative technologies aimed at enhancing student outcomes. Dr. Marquand’s accomplishments have earned him substantial respect and recognition from students, staff, and stakeholders alike.

Additionally, Trustee Marti Emerald was honored as the First Term School Board Member of the Year. Since her election, Ms. Emerald has tirelessly devoted herself to making a meaningful and positive impact on the district’s students and the wider community. In her first two years in office, she partnered with Student Board Representatives and community organizations to spearhead a transformative voter registration drive and implement comprehensive CPR/AED (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator) training for students and staff across the district. Looking ahead, Ms. Emerald is already planning her next project in collaboration with VSP, Gift of Sight, and National Host Lions, which aims to provide free vision exams and glasses to students in need by partnering with neighboring elementary districts.

The Evening of the Stars not only highlighted the remarkable achievements of these dedicated individuals to the students and families of Sweetwater, but also served as a reminder of the vital role the district team play in shaping the future of our students and communities.
Congratulations Trustee Emerald and Dr. Marquand.
