Dear Sweetwater Community,
We stand in solidarity with our neighbors, public agencies, elected officials, and community organizations in response to the unacceptable treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla by federal agents in Los Angeles. This incident does not reflect the values we hold as Americans, and we unequivocally denounce it.
We recognize the growing concern about immigration enforcement in our South Bay community. The Sweetwater Union High School District remains committed to supporting and respecting our Latino and immigrant communities. With a student population that is 70% Latino and 10% Filipino, we take pride in our binational identity and the richness it brings to our schools.
Sweetwater does not collect or maintain immigration status information. Our board policies and administrative regulations ensure staff are equipped to handle these matters with care. Our top priority is to maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for every student.
Living along the border gives us a unique understanding: we can uphold law and order while also demanding empathy in enforcement. Every person deserves dignity, and we call on all who enforce the law to do so with compassion.
To those who choose to protest, we urge peaceful assembly, inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, who showed that nonviolence leads to lasting change.
Let us continue to build a community rooted in unity, diversity, and our shared commitment to justice. Together, we can rise to the challenge and uphold the democratic values that define us.
In solidarity,
Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.

Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.

Dear Sweetwater Community,
As a district that proudly serves a diverse student population, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environments for every student—regardless of immigration status.
In light of recent national developments, we want to reassure our community that our district policies strictly prohibit immigration enforcement on school campuses without a valid judicial warrant. We are also committed to protecting the confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with the law.
All school staff have been reminded of the proper procedures to follow should immigration or law enforcement officials come to a school site. Additionally, schools have access to resources such as “Know Your Rights” materials and legal support contacts to help guide and protect families. Each school will also receive “Red Cards” in English and Spanish, provided by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, which outline Constitutional rights in an easy-to-understand format. These cards are also available in multiple languages online. For immigration resources click here.
Thank you for your trust and partnership as we continue to uphold our values of equity, safety, and respect for all. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school principal or district office.
Best regards,
The Sweetwater Union High School District
Atentamente,
El Distrito Escolar Sweetwater Union High School

Dear Sweetwater Community,
We grieve the recent tragedy in Atlanta, Georgia wherein eight people were killed in connected shooting incidents—six of the victims were of Asian descent.
Members of our Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander communities are hurting as anti-Asian bias and hate-motivated incidents are increasing across the nation and in our region.
Sweetwater Union High School District stands in solidarity with our Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander communities in condemning any and all acts of hate, intolerance, and discrimination.
Throughout our District, we seek to foster a climate and culture that is welcoming to all of our students, faculty, staff, community members, and alumni and ask that you join us in taking action in support of our communities.
Specifically, in support of our Asian, Filipino and Pacific Islander students and communities, we look forward to our continued engagement with the Filipino Advisory Committee as well as the San Diego County Filipino Resource Center. Further, we will partner with San Diego State University Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Center and participate in the APIDA Conference, to be held April 3 and April 10, 2021. This conference will examine COVID-19 impacts on APIDA communities, featuring leaders from STOP Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Hate, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and other organizations.
For students needing assistance or support in dealing with this crisis or discrimination, please contact your school’s counselors or administrators. To access District personnel and services, you may contact Student Support Services at 619-691-5564 or student.services@sweetwaterschools.org.

Dear Sweetwater District Families:
We are so grateful for your incredible dedication and perseverance over the past year, navigating through distance learning and the COVID-19 Pandemic. We appreciate that you have chosen to trust us with your child’s education.
We are especially excited about starting in-person hybrid groups at our school sites. As you may have heard, now that local COVID-19 case rates and positivity rates have fallen dramatically and our educators have had an opportunity to be vaccinated, the district is getting ready for Stage II in the transition to in-person instruction. You may have received a survey regarding in-person instruction potentially beginning April 12, 2021. The exact nature of instruction schools will offer is dependent on the number of families who responded with plans to return in person. We look forward to providing you more details in the coming weeks.
Returning to school in-person may stir some excitement or nervous feelings. We recognize that for as many families as are ready to return to in person instruction, an equal number may not be ready. While we recognize families must make that personal choice for their students, please be reassured that much planning and preparation has and continues to happen to ensure students return to a healthy, safe, and comfortable learning environment as social-emotional wellness is a critical focus for us in returning to in-person instruction.
The District has implemented health and safety protocols and protective measures for the small group instruction that has been occurring on campus over the past few months, and has been expanding those in preparation for in-person hybrid reopening. For your convenience, we have provided a link to the District’s reopening plan adopted by the Board here.
In the coming weeks, the district will provide campus-specific health and safety procedures and details to help students know what to expect and what will be expected of them when they return to campus to ensure all of the Sweetwater community remains safe.
Thank you for helping make our return to in-person instruction go as smoothly as possible.
Please contact your school site if you have questions.
Thank you.

Atentamente,
Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.
