Dear Sweetwater Community,
We stand in solidarity with our neighbors, public agencies, elected officials, and community organizations in response to the unacceptable treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla by federal agents in Los Angeles. This incident does not reflect the values we hold as Americans, and we unequivocally denounce it.
We recognize the growing concern about immigration enforcement in our South Bay community. The Sweetwater Union High School District remains committed to supporting and respecting our Latino and immigrant communities. With a student population that is 70% Latino and 10% Filipino, we take pride in our binational identity and the richness it brings to our schools.
Sweetwater does not collect or maintain immigration status information. Our board policies and administrative regulations ensure staff are equipped to handle these matters with care. Our top priority is to maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for every student.
Living along the border gives us a unique understanding: we can uphold law and order while also demanding empathy in enforcement. Every person deserves dignity, and we call on all who enforce the law to do so with compassion.
To those who choose to protest, we urge peaceful assembly, inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, who showed that nonviolence leads to lasting change.
Let us continue to build a community rooted in unity, diversity, and our shared commitment to justice. Together, we can rise to the challenge and uphold the democratic values that define us.
In solidarity,
Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.

Sweetwater Union High School District
Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.
Superintendente
Distrito Escolar Sweetwater Union High
Dear Sweetwater Community,
As a district that proudly serves a diverse student population, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environments for every student—regardless of immigration status.
In light of recent national developments, we want to reassure our community that our district policies strictly prohibit immigration enforcement on school campuses without a valid judicial warrant. We are also committed to protecting the confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with the law.
All school staff have been reminded of the proper procedures to follow should immigration or law enforcement officials come to a school site. Additionally, schools have access to resources such as “Know Your Rights” materials and legal support contacts to help guide and protect families. Each school will also receive “Red Cards” in English and Spanish, provided by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, which outline Constitutional rights in an easy-to-understand format. These cards are also available in multiple languages online. For immigration resources click here.
Thank you for your trust and partnership as we continue to uphold our values of equity, safety, and respect for all. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school principal or district office.
Best regards,
The Sweetwater Union High School District
Atentamente,
El Distrito Escolar Sweetwater Union High School

The new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) instituted by Governor Brown and the legislature last year required that Districts develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). Development of the LCAP required “Stakeholder engagement”, i.e. that Districts create a process for identified stakeholders to participate in the process. In our process we aligned existing District priorities with the eight state priorities, used a gallery walk process to obtain stakeholder feedback, and through this process, identified five (5) key LCAP goals for implementation in 2014-2015. These were A-G Coursework and Completion, Access to Technology, Parent Involvement, Common Core Implementation, and Professional Development.
We are once again involving our stakeholders in this process. The CDE has changed the LCAP template and updated regulations to support this process. Our task is to review the five goals, described action steps we have taken to implement the goals and seek feedback on what has worked, what we should we keep doing or stop doing, what we should enhance and/or add, focused on what will improve educational outcomes for our targeted sub-groups, English Leaners, Foster and Homeless Youth, and Educational Disadvantaged Youth.
We would like to seek stakeholder input as we undergo the revision process of the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). All school sites are undergoing this same process through a series of site meetings that all stakeholders are welcome to participate. You can also participate by completing the survey online.
Below are three links, the first is a video to the review of our LCAP action steps, the second is a survey for parents, and the third is a survey for students.

The Local Control Funding Formula, or LCFF, is California’s new formula for determining the level of state funding provided to school districts to provide for their general and supplemental programs. LCFF is designed to provide school districts with flexibility to direct resources to meet student needs.
In the LCFF Districts must:
This is done via development of a Local Accountability Plan, LCAP. Parents, community members, pupils, bargaining units must be engaged and involved in developing, reviewing, and supporting implementation of the LCAP. English Learner parents and Foster youth stakeholders must also be involved.
The Sweetwater Union High School District has developed a Local Accountability Plan (LCAP) that incorporates District goals following the eight state priorities. We are reaching out to seek comment and input by organizing meetings where the various groups will have the opportunity to examine student performance data, surveys, and other data, and evaluate the importance of each District goal by rating each goal. Everyone will also have an opportunity to provide suggestions and comments on each goal.
The following meetings are planned or in process:

We look forward to your participation in this effort!
Dr. Karen Janney named in unanimous decision
In a closed session on June 8, 2015, the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees selected Dr. Karen Janney to be the permanent Superintendent.
The trustees will vote on a contract for Dr. Janney at the regularly scheduled meeting on June 22, 2015 at which time she will officially begin in the new role. In the interim, Mr. Phil Stover will remain at Sweetwater to assist in the transition of the new superintendent.
Dr. Janney is a former Assistant Superintendent and Principal in the Sweetwater District who most recently has served as an Executive Coach for the National Center for Urban School Transformation and as a Lecturer and Supervisor in the San Diego State University Educational Leadership Department.
The search for the permanent superintendent was done by the Cosca Group, who was selected by the Board of Trustees in March. The Board of Trustees received 19 applications and narrowed the search down to five candidates who were interviewed for the position.
The Sweetwater Union High School District serves approximately 41,000 students in grades 7-12 and over 22,000 adult education students in the South County of San Diego. The Sweetwater District is the largest secondary district in the State of California.
