Dear Sweetwater Community,
We stand in solidarity with our neighbors, public agencies, elected officials, and community organizations in response to the unacceptable treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla by federal agents in Los Angeles. This incident does not reflect the values we hold as Americans, and we unequivocally denounce it.
We recognize the growing concern about immigration enforcement in our South Bay community. The Sweetwater Union High School District remains committed to supporting and respecting our Latino and immigrant communities. With a student population that is 70% Latino and 10% Filipino, we take pride in our binational identity and the richness it brings to our schools.
Sweetwater does not collect or maintain immigration status information. Our board policies and administrative regulations ensure staff are equipped to handle these matters with care. Our top priority is to maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for every student.
Living along the border gives us a unique understanding: we can uphold law and order while also demanding empathy in enforcement. Every person deserves dignity, and we call on all who enforce the law to do so with compassion.
To those who choose to protest, we urge peaceful assembly, inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez, who showed that nonviolence leads to lasting change.
Let us continue to build a community rooted in unity, diversity, and our shared commitment to justice. Together, we can rise to the challenge and uphold the democratic values that define us.
In solidarity,
Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Sweetwater Union High School District
Moises G. Aguirre, Ed.D.
Superintendente
Distrito Escolar Sweetwater Union High
Dear Sweetwater Community,
As a district that proudly serves a diverse student population, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environments for every student—regardless of immigration status.
In light of recent national developments, we want to reassure our community that our district policies strictly prohibit immigration enforcement on school campuses without a valid judicial warrant. We are also committed to protecting the confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with the law.
All school staff have been reminded of the proper procedures to follow should immigration or law enforcement officials come to a school site. Additionally, schools have access to resources such as “Know Your Rights” materials and legal support contacts to help guide and protect families. Each school will also receive “Red Cards” in English and Spanish, provided by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, which outline Constitutional rights in an easy-to-understand format. These cards are also available in multiple languages online. For immigration resources click here.
Thank you for your trust and partnership as we continue to uphold our values of equity, safety, and respect for all. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school principal or district office.
Best regards,
The Sweetwater Union High School District
Atentamente,

Kids 4 Our World founded by Bonita Vista High Freshman
As a freshman in high school, most students are still trying to find their way, getting used to their classes and making a place for themselves at school. Bonita Vista High Freshman Miguel Aldrete has not only found his way, he’s making his own path towards making the world a better place.
At the age of 8, Aldrete heard about the problem of deforestation and knew that it was up to him to make a difference. His solution was to write two books and use the profits towards finding solutions to some of the world’s environmental problems.
The Adventures of Matt Hanckers series was born and “The Glowing Mask in Hawaii” and “The Mayan Prophecy” began to fund Aldrete’s work. As he says, “You don’t have to be an adult or famous to make a difference in our world.”
With almost five years and 14,000 trees planted in seven different countries, Aldrete has recruited his friends from Olympian High (OLH) and Rancho del Rey Middle (RDM) for what is proving to be the biggest project to date – planting 1,600 trees in an area that has been 90% deforested in Costa Rica during the summer of 2015.
The group, known as the K4OW International Ambassadors includes Miguel Angel Aldrete (BVH), Alejandro Avalos (RDM), Luis Enrique Avalos (OLH), Ryan Didonato (OLH), Dennis “DJ” O’Brien (OLH), and Manuel Aguilera-Prieto (OLH).
In collaboration with the La Reserva Forest Foundation, the group of Kids for Our World Ambassadors plan on raising $23,000 to plant 1,600 trees, help three species of endangered monkeys and participate in a cultural exchange with the indigenous Maleku people of Costa Rica.
In addition, the group of ambassadors – all avid soccer fans and players – will be introducing an eco-friendly called the “Soccket Ball” to the Maleku. The soccer ball, when used for play, generates a clean-power LED lamp that is located inside the ball. One hour of play can generate up to 3 hours of light.
“We wanted to take our requirement for community service hour requirements to the next level,” said Aguilera-Prieto. “We want to truly make an impact in our school, in our communities and in our world.”

Dr. Tim Glover to return to San Diego County Office of Education
Interim Superintendent, Dr. Tim Glover, has resigned his position effective February 18, 2015.
Glover’s resignation was submitted in the interest of ensuring that an open and transparent process is followed in the search for a permanent superintendent. If he chooses, Dr. Glover will be eligible to openly compete for the position.
Dr. Glover is a product of Castle Park High School and returned to the Sweetwater District after serving as the Assistant Superintendent of the Student Services and Programs Division at the San Diego County Office of Education. He will return to this position upon leaving the Sweetwater District.
“It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve the Sweetwater Union High School District and its incredibly talented students, staff, school and department leaders,” said Glover. “I’m proud of what we have accomplished over the past several months and I leave Sweetwater with a great sense of optimism for the future.”
Since July, 2014, Glover took on numerous tasks of restoring a sense of integrity, honesty and professionalism to the Sweetwater District. This included bringing in third-party organizations to look at the Sweetwater District’s fiscal stability, technology initiatives, district-owned properties, and charters formed in the Sweetwater District.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire community, we want to thank Dr. Glover for his hard work and dedication,” said Board President Frank Tarantino. “His positive efforts to stabilize the Sweetwater Union High School District will continue to be felt even after he is gone.”
The Board of Trustees will be meeting in a closed session meeting on Tuesday, January 27, at 5:30 p.m., to discuss this matter and continue forward in finding a permanent superintendent.
