2021-22 School Year Update – May 21, 2021

Hello Sweetwater Families,

As the 2020-21 school year is coming to a close, we want to take a moment to say thank you for all that your students have accomplished during this very challenging year, where we have all been impacted by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Also, we would like to update you regarding the 2021-22 school year. All of the schools in our District will be returning for in-person instruction, five-days a week, during the upcoming school year. We will continue to closely monitor federal, state, and county health guidance to ensure our return is done in a manner that observes the prevailing safety protocols.

Dear Sweetwater Union High School District Families,

We hope that you and your family are having a safe and healthy 2021. As we began our second semester, COVID-19 pandemic continued to have a significant impact on our community and on the entire nation. With the rollout of the vaccine happening, we are hopeful and cautiously optimistic about the coming weeks and months.

With San Diego County still in the “Purple Tier,” schools are not allowed to reopen at this time as outlined in the California Department of Public Health guidance. Therefore, Sweetwater will continue distance learning for the time being. Our next status update will be provided on March 1, 2021.

As a district we will continue and expand small in-person groups and supports where possible. Based on the guidance of the California Department of Public Health and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), some athletics programs will begin in the coming weeks. More information on this will be coming from your school sites.

December 03, 2020 – Update Regarding Governor’s Stay at Home Order

Dear SUHSD Families,

As you may know, Gov. Gavin Newsom today issued a regional stay at home order that will impact many businesses and industries in San Diego County for at least three weeks. This order may begin as early as this Friday, December 4. The order is applicable in areas where hospitals’ intensive care unit (ICU) capacity falls below 15%.

It is important to note that this order does not create significant change in our current operations and plans for the near future. Therefore, while we still anticipate restarting small group cohorts on December 7, 2020, we are still analyzing it and waiting for the County of San Diego to share specific details of what this means for our region, including when the order will go into effect locally. Your school will contact you and provide more guidance regarding the specific site-based cohort start dates.

The order, which divides California into five regions, prohibits private gatherings of any size; closes operations for sectors such as bars and wineries, and salons; and requires 100% masking and physical distancing in retail and other sectors. San Diego County is in the Southern California Tier, which also includes Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to work with local public health as we move forward. We will also continue to share updates as they become available. You can find the most current information in our district’s reopening plans.

Letter to SUHSD Community – Nov. 30, 2020

Dear Sweetwater Union High School District Families,

We hope this letter finds you and your family safe and healthy. The COVID-19 pandemic remains a major challenge to our community, state, nation, and specifically our schools. Here in South County, where our COVID numbers are nearly twice that of San Diego County, we acknowledge the daily impacts the pandemic is having on all of us.

Given the current state of community spread, we wanted to update you on action that our Board of Trustees took last week: the Board of Trustees approved a plan to continue distance learning into the second semester in January, 2021. They also approved plans to continue and expand small in-person groups and supports where possible, and to continue our athletic conditioning program for students per the guidelines of the California Department of Public Health.

Finally, the Trustees also updated metrics for reopening in-person learning on campus based on South County’s COVID cases and positivity rates in our community and added an additional milestone checkpoint on our plan for February 1, 2021. This enables us to continue to provide updates on small in-person groups and, if possible, move into the next steps of our reopening plan’s return to in-person instruction.

We acknowledge how difficult these decisions are for our school community, all of whom wish we could be back on campus teaching and/or learning. We will continue to closely monitor the latest information and work with our local health agencies, medical professions and our partners to ensure that our reopening decisions focus on the health and safety of our students, staff and the entire community.

SUHSD Distance Learning Update – Sep. 21, 2020

Dear Sweetwater Union High School District Families,

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact on our entire community. Although it had been our hope that we might see lower infection rates in San Diego County, and in particular our South Bay region, instead the most recent data shows that we are in danger of moving back into higher risk categories. This is even more pronounced in our region, where infection rates are significantly higher than other regions of San Diego County.

It is with this information, and with our continued commitment to the safety of our students, families, and staff, that we announce the continuation of distance learning for the remainder of the semester through December 2020. As was outlined in our reopening plan earlier in the summer, our next checkpoint will be by November 30, 2020, to determine how we will start the second semester in January 2021.

Although we will remain in distance learning, we are committed to continuing to find ways that we can provide in-person services to some of our highest needs students. As pandemic conditions may allow, staff will be reaching out to these families directly as more information becomes available.

If the situation improves, the district’s reopening plan allows for the possibility of small group supports (per California Department of Public Health). Once these small group supports begin and conditions approach the Substantial or Moderate levels as defined by the California Department of Public Health, the District will reassess a phased approach to restarting athletics and visual and performing arts activities, as health and safety protocols allow.

During this incredibly challenging time, we will continue to closely monitor the latest information and work with our local health agencies and our partners to ensure that we are doing what is in the best public health interest of the entire community.

Dear SUHSD Families,

You may have heard the news that the County of San Diego was removed from the state’s COVID-19 watchlist and wonder what it means for the Sweetwater Union High School District.

While this is encouraging news that could help pave the way for us to reopen schools, there are also some important things to keep in mind. Specifically, these numbers will need to stay within the acceptable range for at least 14 days before schools in San Diego County will be allowed to reopen without a waiver.

Given this time frame, and the significant impact that COVID-19 has had on the South County, our commitment remains to continue distance learning through at least October 2, 2020. A determination of next steps will be shared with the community by September 21, 2020.

Our process for reopening remains the same. For the last several months, we have been developing plans to ensure we do everything possible to ensure healthy environments for our students and employees. District leadership has also been working with our employee associations to develop memoranda of understanding that address conditions in our schools before employees return to school sites.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation and will continue to work with local public health officials as we move forward and update you with any changes as they become available. You can also find the most current information on our district’s reopening plans at www.sweetwaterschools.org.

Dear Students and Families of the Sweetwater Union High School District,

Graduations are a time-honored tradition that the entire community looks forward to every year. Unfortunately, because of the impacts of COVID-19, we have had to make adjustments to these traditions in 2020 in order to ensure the safety and security of our students, our families, our staff, and the entire Sweetwater Union High School District Community.

In late April we surveyed Seniors and their families to ask how they were feeling about graduation ceremonies. It was very clear that the great majority, 81% of students and 90% of families, believe that some type of graduation ceremony is important. The majority of students and families also believe that the ceremony should be delayed.

Given that as of now, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Public Health Orders still prevent public events and gatherings, graduation ceremonies in the Sweetwater Union High School District are postponed.

Graduation events will be considered in late July/early August under the guidelines of San Diego County Public Health Orders at that time. If a graduation event is not possible at that time, the events will be postponed until December 2020.

In the meantime, schools will be keeping in contact with our Seniors and families to keep them up to date on any updates and changes. We appreciate the Class of 2020 and look forward to celebrating with you!

Dear Sweetwater Union High School District Students, Families, and Staff,

First, we hope that you and the ones you love and care for are navigating these very unique times as well as possible. We trust you and yours are managing to maintain good spirits – despite all the life changes and associated hardships – and staying out of harm’s way.

Second, we want to thank and recognize our amazing Nutrition Services staff. May 1, 2020 is School Lunch Hero Day and we thank them for serving our community and distributing almost 700,000 meals in the past six weeks.

Speaking of heroes, May 4-8, 2020 is National Teacher Appreciation Week, and May 6, 2020 is National School Nurses Day. More than ever, their efforts are very much appreciated, and we thank our teachers and nurses in Sweetwater. Look for more information about both of these recognition events in the coming week.

This week you may have heard that California Governor Gavin Newsom mentioned that he was considering that the 2020-2021 school year may re-open in late July. While Sweetwater and our South County elementary districts have started school in July for many years, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond stated that all schools have some major questions that need to be answered before we consider physically reopening schools, especially being able to maintain the health and safety of our students and staff.

Governor Newsom also made it very clear that there is a “roadmap” that we must follow in order to reopen the economy and public services in a multi-phase approach. You can view more detailed information about that here.

We know that South County has been impacted the greatest by COVID-19 and as we work towards what will happen in the coming months, we will continue to work with the San Diego County Office of Education and San Diego County Public Health Department in determining how, and when, to return students and staff safely to school.

Finally, we want to share with you some of the results of the survey we sent out to Seniors and their families. It was very clear that the great majority, 81% of students and 90% of families, believe that some type of graduation ceremony is important. The majority of students and families also believe that the ceremony should be delayed. Only 9% of students and 12% of families were in favor of a virtual event. Therefore, as of now, we will plan to host some form of a physical graduation ceremony at a later date.

That being said, schools are working very hard to find ways to recognize their Seniors and 8^th graders now, and especially the last week of school June 1-5. Several schools have already begun to reach out and do some type of recognition and much will depend on any State and County public health guidelines. As a district we will continue to work with each community to find a plan of action that best meets the needs of our students. Hello Sweetwater Union High School District Students, Parents and Community,

As we prepare for the launch of our Distance Learning programs, we want to share with you the resources available for parents and students. As a reminder, the distance learning websites are available for all and continue to be updated. This week we also published a one-page set of guidelines for distance learning for all to follow. Finally, we are including a much more comprehensive guide to distance learning.

For our Senior students (12th graders), we sent out a survey this week to ask about graduation and looking for both parent and student input on this. You can see the link to the survey here . We ask that parents and student log in together, as we require a Sweetwater District email address for completion. Once logged in, you can answer in either the ‘parent’ or ‘student’ section. Please share this as we’d like to hear from as many students and parents as possible.

Once again, we wanted to remind the community about our meal distribution service that will continue to take place every Tuesday, and is scheduled next for April 21, 2020 from 11 AM to 1 PM (while supplies last). Please note that meals will be distributed while supplies last. This past Tuesday, we distributed over 150,000 meals! Finally, also note that this week there will be no distribution at Eastlake High. Instead the distribution will be at EastLake Middle during the same time. For the full list of locations, click here .

Good afternoon Sweetwater District Students, Parents and Community,

First of all, we hope you are all staying safe and staying well. As we continue to see the situation evolve, we also continue to take the necessary steps to continue to serve the students and communities of the Sweetwater Union High School District.

As we shared earlier this week, Governor Newsom and State Superintendent Thurmond recommended that all school sites remain closed. This along with the most recent guidance from San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency means that for Sweetwater, we will continue to operate as we have been over the past two weeks during our Spring Break.

Specifically, the district office and school sites remain closed to the general public. As we shared last week, Sweetwater will begin our transition into distance learning. This coming week you will begin hearing from your school principal and from your teachers and counselors sharing how we will be continuing learning in the weeks to come.

This week we heard from several of our partners and were provided updates about things such as University of California and California State University requirements. We heard official an official notice from the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) that Spring sports are officially canceled. And as we shared earlier, we are looking into ways to celebrate students, especially our graduating Seniors. In the next few days we will be putting out a brief survey to students asking for their input and ideas on how we can properly celebrate their accomplishments. So please keep an eye out for that.

On a positive note, thanks to the efforts of so many of you, we’ve been able to distribute over 123,000 meals over the past three weeks and we are pleased to share that we will be continuing a meal distribution service beginning this coming Tuesday, April 7, 2020 and will continue every Tuesday during April from 11 AM to 1 PM at 14 school sites (see attachment for locations).

Finally, we want to thank each and every one of you that has reached out to us to offer your assistance and your ideas. This is a very hard situation for all of us, and especially for our students. Together as a community we can come together and show that we can overcome this together.

Dear Sweetwater Union High School District Community,

As many of you saw last night and this morning, Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond released information that stated, “Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing, it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning.” Superintendent Thurmond urged all school districts in California to move towards and/or continue to strengthen distance learning programs and opportunities for students at this time.

With this new information and with an abundance of caution, the Sweetwater Union High School District, along with school district superintendents from across the State of California, are taking a safety-first approach and immediate action to extend the school facility closures through the end of the school year. However, in the future, if the stay-at-home order is lifted and the COVID-19 situation improves, we will certainly do our best to reopen school facilities.

To be clear, the 2019-20 school year is not over, it has just transitioned from classroom instruction into distance learning. As we have been sharing, the specific details on distance learning will be coming in the next few days.

We want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we are all quickly transitioning into a new way of teaching and learning to meet the health and safety needs of our community due to the impacts of COVID-19. It’s challenging to many educators, our students and families to learn and communicate in a very new world; however, working together we can and will meet this challenge.

We are also committed to supporting the social and emotional well-being of all of our students and staff are working on ways to stay connected, even at a distance. We are aware that our seniors were looking forward to graduation ceremonies and, along with families, are very concerned about missing out on these momentous celebrations. Please know that district leaders will be planning how we might offer these experiences in different formats and/or at a later date. In the coming days and weeks, we will provide families with information regarding how grades, graduation, transcripts, scholarships, summer school, and continued distance learning instruction will be handled.

While we recognize this extension of school facility closures poses challenges and hardships to many families in our community, the most effective way to slow and disrupt the transmission of COVID-19 is by continuing to implement stay at home orders and social distancing practices. We are grateful to our students, staff and families throughout our community for your tremendous prevention efforts during this unique and difficult time.

Dear Senior Students of the Sweetwater Union High School District,

We know that you have many questions regarding this school year in regards to community service requirements, credit completion, prom, grad night, graduation, and other important milestones. Many of these items are still under consideration and will be addressed in detail in another communication in the near future. However, we did want to immediately address the current requirement of 30 hours of community services. Our official guidance for this school year is that the class of 2020 will not be required to meet the community service hours in order to be eligible for graduation. Because the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency has extended the order to stay home and eliminate any gatherings, and the social distancing requirements remain in place, we do not want to expose students to any potential harm. The community service requirement has been eliminated for this school year.

Please read our message below regarding distance learning and teacher preparation.

Dear Sweetwater Union High School Students and Parents/Guardians,

Despite the uncertainty that students, parents and community members are currently facing in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, please rest assured that your health, well-being, and safety are our highest priority. We were committed over the past two weeks to continue providing meals for students at our designated food distribution centers. Please see our district webpage for locations and updates (https://www.sweetwaterschools.org) for next week.

The Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) acknowledges that parents and students have concerns about the remainder of the school year. We can assure you that we are working around the clock to provide students with the necessary tools to continue their course work. As we prepare to academically re-engage with students after spring break that ends April 3, the SUHSD has been working with teachers and counselors to ensure that learning continues for the rest of the school year. At this time, we are planning for two weeks of teacher and counselor preparation to transition to distance learning for students in mid-April. You will be notified with specific instructions when this happens. While teachers and counselors are getting trained from April 6 through April 17, we are encouraging students to take advantage of the enrichment activities that can be found on our district webpage beginning on April 6.

Please know that the California Department of Education developed guidelines for Distance Learning. Distance learning means that you would not be taught in the typical teacher-classroom setting, rather students and teachers interact from different locations. We know that the transition from in-person/classroom learning to distance learning may be challenging, so we will ensure there are a variety of supports in place for students and parents.

We are working hard on making sure to provide access for each student as we develop and refine our distance learning program. The goal of this plan is to continue, and not interrupt, your middle or high school education. Distance learning will be delivered in digital (computer-based) or non-digital (paper) depending on your access; we are currently developing the best format that will meet your academic needs. Another update will be sent on April 3, 2020. During these unprecedented times, we believe the best way forward is to work together with you, teachers and counselors to make sure the process for educating each student continues. We will follow the guidelines provided by the California Department of Education and the San Diego County Office of Education as we finalize our plans, keeping you updated along the way.

The first step, to ensure we have the best information, is for you to complete a survey. Parents/Guardians, please sit with your student to complete this survey to inform us of your needs for technology and WIFI access: https://bit.ly/DLstudentsurvey It’s important we hear back from each and every student; we ask that each student in your household complete a survey.

Again, we appreciate your patience and understanding as we address everything needed to get us through this uncharted territory. We continue to engage with public health experts, the California Department of Education and the San Diego County office of Education about best practices related to COVID-19 readiness and response, and also next steps we may need to take. We are working diligently to keep up with this information and to inform you as quickly as possible about any changes caused by evolving events. Dear Sweetwater Staff, Students, Families and Community,

In this time of great uncertainty, our first priority is the health and welfare of our students, families, staff, and community. This is an unprecedented situation that doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Here in Sweetwater we are working together to figure it out as new information becomes available.

The last few days has continued to be challenging. As you are all aware, last night Governor Gavin Newsom issued an order for Californians to stay at home except for essential needs. This order is in place until further notice. You can read more about the order here: https://covid19.ca.gov/stay-home-except-for-essential-needs/

In a unified effort to protect the health of students, staff and school communities, the Sweetwater Union School District and other school districts countywide, in collaboration with the County Department of Public Health, made the collective decision to remain closed until further notice.

The Governor’s order acknowledges the essential role of school districts. We are committed to carrying out essential services such as preparing and distributing meals to students and any function associated with keeping the continuity of learning moving forward.

As of now, here is the latest information we have received about testing and Advanced Placement (AP) exams:

The Federal government has suspended all national testing requirements for this school year, therefore the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) and the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are cancelled.
The Advanced Placement exams are planning on continuing with modified exams that students can take in their homes. The details of that announcement can be found on the AP Central website:https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update. The organization that administers International Baccalaureate Exams, which are given at Bonita Vista High and Castle Park High, has not yet announced its plan. They promise to provide an update by March 27 here: https://www.ibo.org/news/news-about-the-ib/covid-19-coronavirus-updates/.

We have been working closely with our employee groups to define what this all means as we go forward and we will continue to update you with any and all news in as timely a manner as we can. We have also been listening to the concerns and ideas from students and parents. In the meantime, we want to thank you for supporting us over the last few days. Our staff will continue working hard to feed thousands of students, we will continue to communicate with students, staff and parents and reassure you that things will be okay, that our facilities will be clean, and ensure that our campuses are safe and secure.

Good morning SUHSD Community,

This is a very unique and unprecedented time and we want to thank you all for your efforts and cooperation as we continue to work through this situation. We wanted to provide you with a few updates on a couple of topics.

School Site and District Office Closures

Beginning Wednesday, March 18 through Friday, March 20, 2020, all of our school sites will be closed with minimal site staff. Additionally, many District Office departments will be minimally staffed, however the two entrances at 1130 Fifth Ave. will be open through Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Beginning Wednesday, March 18 through Friday, March 20, 2020, all of our school sites will be closed with minimal site staff. Additionally many District Office departments will be minimally staffed, however the two entrances at 1130 Fifth Ave. will be open through Friday at 4:30 p.m.

As of Monday, March 23, 2020, during our scheduled Spring Break, the District Office and school sites will be closed to the public. Thank you for your understanding and support.

We will continue to provide updates as we move forward and we thank you for making adjustments as we continue to receive more information and more precise guidance from public health authorities, the California Department of Education, the San Diego County Office of Education, and our own Sweetwater District. Dear SUHSD Community,

As you know, current events involving COVID-19 are developing rapidly in our country and our region. In consultation with County Public Health and superintendents from school districts across San Diego County, all public schools will close beginning Monday, March 16, 2020. In the South County, the Chula Vista Elementary School District, National School District, San Ysidro School District, South Bay Union School District and Sweetwater Union High School District will each close schools through Friday, April 3, 2020. At this time, classes are scheduled to resume April 6, 2020. This cancellation includes all school and district events, including athletics.

Students should stay home and minimize social contact as much as possible to keep all family members safe. South County districts are exploring with our cities, the County of San Diego, and community organizations, what it can do to support students and families while schools are closed during the week before Spring Break, as well as the break.

This decision was made with the best interests of students and staff in mind. Instead of doing reactive, school by school closures, we’re going to focus the next three weeks on how we can provide essential support for our community in this new reality. It is likely we will be seeing many more cases of COVID-19 in the coming weeks and months and this will require a measured, sustained response.

Key district and site staff will be working to monitor the situation, continue operational planning, and to support students in essential areas as needed. Given the many uncertainties of this situation, district leadership and staff are making every effort to minimize the impacts on long-term student learning.

Good morning Sweetwater Community,

After careful consideration, and based on guidance from the State of California, the California Department of Education, and the San Diego County Office of Education, the Sweetwater Union High School District, along with all other public school districts in San Diego County, will be closing all schools and cancelling all school-related activities as of Monday, March 16, 2020 through Friday, April 3, 2020.

Please note that today, schools will be operating as scheduled and it will be business as usual. Joint information will be coming from all of the districts in South County in the coming hours and over the next several days.

Good morning SUHSD Community,

Taking into consideration guidance provided by Governor Gavin Newsom today, district and school site officials continue to meet to discuss the rapidly evolving situation related to COVID-19.

As of today, the Sweetwater Union High School District will be canceling the following events for the remainder of this week (Thursday March 12, Friday March 13, and Saturday March 14):

School field trips – both local and out of town
District events such as:
- Visual and Performing Arts events
- National Math and Science Institute (NMSI) events
- Robotics events
- Professional development events
- School assemblies
- Large group parent meetings
*Please note that athletic events have not been canceled, but state and local CIF officials are considering all possible scenarios. More information will be coming later today.

A decision about events occurring after this weekend will be made, and communicated, to our community in the very near future.

School will continue to be in session, and as we communicated yesterday, any decision to close schools in San Diego County will be done under the advice of the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency and the San Diego County Office of Education.

COVID-19 Communication

Like all K-12 districts in California and across the nation, the Sweetwater Union High School District continues to closely monitor the rapidly changing status of COVID-19.

Our efforts have included keeping up to date with several closures of local colleges and universities such as UCSD, SDSU, and Southwestern College. However, Sweetwater and other local school district have remained open and instruction is continuing as planned.

Our schools follow the advice of local and state health officials, specifically the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency. Although district superintendents have the authority to declare a school or district emergency, during a public health emergency, San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency is the county’s lead agency. At this time, they have not recommended school closures or event cancellations. Should that change, we will follow their recommendation along with the advice and input from the San Diego County Office of Education.

Over the next few days and weeks, we will continue to make adjustments and decisions about school related events and activities. Until then, please be assured that we are in constant contact with local authorities about COVID-19 and we will continue to seek and follow guidance of our County Health and Human Services Agency and the San Diego County Office of Education.

COVID-19 Statement

We know that the increased attention to COVID-19 over the past couple of weeks has also raised a number of questions and concerns in our own community.

As of today, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the Sweetwater District community, and one case that is pending positive confirmation within all of San Diego County. However, this does not mean that we are not actively creating and implementing plans and strategies to address this growing concern.

We have launched an informational page on the district website, and we have begun sending updates to parents and staff with the latest information known to us. We continue to monitor and share the most recent and vetted information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, and the San Diego County Office of Education.

As a direct response, the district has convened an Operations Team where we are addressing a number of topics that impact student and staff health, physical operations, facilities, safety and security, communications, and teaching and learning. This team is working with staff from across the district and was also recently invited to a county-wide planning group with several partner agencies to ensure any swift actions are taken should the need arise.

There are a few actions that we have taken in direct response to travel concerns. First, because of US State Department travel guidelines, we did have one student group who was scheduled to go to Europe over Spring Break. We have worked with that school and their travel agency to delay that trip until clearance is given. Second, since almost the start of the semester, we have ceased several of our exchange programs where students are coming from, and going to, affected parts of the world.

Finally, as has been stated by others, we ask our community to continue to be vigilant about hygiene practices such as hand washing and staying home if they feel ill. COVID 19 Update – March 5, 2020

As we continue to monitor the unfolding situation re: COVID-19, we wanted to share a few more Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that we have been hearing. In addition, we have been in contact with officials from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHS) and the City of Chula Vista regarding a situation involving a retail store in Chula Vista. The following statement from the City of Chula Vista is a clear summary of the situation:

“On March 4, 2020, the City of Chula Vista was informed by County of San Diego health officials that an individual recently tested presumptive positive for COVID-19 and had close, yet minimal, contact with persons within the city of Chula Vista. The individual is a resident of another CA county and had recently traveled to a high-risk region as defined by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC). County health officials have made contact with those persons believed to have been in close contact with the individual. Although County health officials indicate the risk to other persons is low, County officials advised all involved persons to follow CDC guidance to self-quarantine. These persons will continue to be monitored for 14-days. The City of Chula Vista is providing this information out of an abundance of caution. The City of Chula Vista believes the current risk to our community is low and will continue to coordinate with the County of San Diego to monitor the on-going situation. For questions or more information about COVID-19, please visit the County of San Diego Public Health Services webpage (https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/hhsa/programs/phs/) or call 2-1-1.”

We have been advised by County HHS that there are no direct connections to any students, parents, or staff within the Sweetwater District. Anyone that is potentially at risk was contacted directly by County HHS and that the risk of anyone who might have been in the area, or visited the store, is low.

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Like most of you, the Sweetwater Union High School District is continuing to closely monitor the developing situation of the coronavirus (now named COVID-19). Although there are no cases in our area, as a community we want to make you aware that we are planning and preparing as a district.

As of this week, County health officials report there are only two known cases of coronavirus in San Diego County. Both individuals were on repatriation flights from Wuhan, China and are under federal quarantine at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

You may also be aware that the disease has spread to other countries and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued new travel warnings with increased concern for South Korea, Japan, and Italy. Travel warnings for China have not changed, and the CDC has lowered its level of concern for travel to Hong Kong and Taiwan. Additional detail about these warnings can be found on the CDC website.

The CDC also recently shared that the coronavirus almost certainly will begin spreading in communities in the United States, and Americans should begin preparations now. We are working with county school and health officials to establish protocols for schools in the event that coronavirus does spread in San Diego. Be assured, we are prepared for a range of possible contingencies, such as school closures, should this situation develop. In the event that school must be dismissed for an extended period of time, we want to assure you that we will incorporate a variety of instructional strategies to connect with the home. In all eventualities, we are committed to providing you with clear, timely communications about this fluid situation.

More information will be shared as this plan develops. In the meantime, current information about the coronavirus is available on the CDC and County of San Diego/Health and Human Services websites.

As a reminder, if your child is sick, please keep them home from school. To help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including the coronavirus and flu, follow these important tips:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
Get vaccinated every year.

Additionally, the California Department of Public Health does not recommend the use of face masks for general prevention and says that handwashing provides better protection from infectious diseases. Our District is taking the following steps:

Monitoring the COVID-19 situation daily and working with our partners at San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, the San Diego County Office of Education and our feeder elementary districts.
Following guidelines provided by the California Department of Public Health and Center for Disease Control.
Informing our staff, students, and families of proper hygiene.
Updating our emergency plans based on the information provided by these reputable agencies to prevent spread of the COVID-19 virus and to ensure procedures are in place in the unlikely case that we have a wide-spread outbreak in Chula Vista.

Como recordatorio, si su hijo (a) está enfermo, es necesario que permanezca en casa. Para ayudar a prevenir la propagación de virus respiratorios, inclusive del coronavirus y la gripe, sigan los siguientes consejos importantes:

Lavarse las manos con frecuencia con agua y jabón durante al menos 20 segundos. Si no hay agua y jabón disponibles, utilice un desinfectante para manos con base de alcohol.
Evitar tocarse los ojos, la nariz, y la boca sin antes lavarse las manos.
Evitar el contacto cercano con personas que están enfermas.
Quédese en casa cuando esté enfermo.
Cubirse la boca al toser. Estornudar utilizando un pañuelo desechable, y luego tirarlo a la basura.
Limpiar y desinfectar objetos y superficies que se tocan con frecuencia.
Las personas con problemas de salud crónicos o las personas que experimentan síntomas graves deben ser examinadas por personal médico profesional.
Vacunarse todos los años.

Por otra parte, el Departamento de Salud Pública de California no recomienda el uso de mascarillas para la prevención general y afirma que el lavado de manos proporciona una mejor protección contra las enfermedades infecciosas. El Distrito de Sweetwater está tomando las siguientes medidas:

Monitorear diariamente la situación de COVID-19 y trabajar con nuestros socios de la Agencia de Salud y Servicios Humanos del Condado de San Diego, la Oficina de Educación del Condado de San Diego y los distritos de educación primaria correspondientes.
Seguir las guías proporcionadas por el Departamento de Salud Pública de California y el Centro para el Control de Enfermedades.
Informar al personal, alumnos y a las familias sobre la higiene adecuada.
Actualizar nuestros planes de emergencia con base en la información proporcionada por dichas agencias acreditadas para prevenir la propagación del virus COVID-19 y asegurar que se implementen los procedimientos en el caso poco probable de que tengamos un brote generalizado en Chula Vista.
