The Sweetwater District proudly hosted the RISE: African American Scholars Conference at Southwestern College, themed “Black Excellence: Pride in Our Roots, Power in Our Future.” This inspiring event brought together students, educators, and community members to celebrate the achievements and potential of African American scholars within SUHSD.
The conference featured Keynote Speaker, Shawntanet Jara from the San Diego County Office of Education who emphasized the importance of knowing your roots, awakening your power, and raising your voice. Jaras’ message served as powerful reminders that we are not defined by obstacles, but rather by our resilience and determination to succeed.
Students attended breakout sessions that dove into topics like college readiness, career pathways, financial planning, and much more.
Superintendent Dr. Moises G. Aguirre stated, “As you look around this room, you are the leaders who will take charge of the future. While challenges may arise, the torch of leadership and excellence will be passed from one generation to the next. Your potential is limitless, and you possess the genius within you to make a difference.”
The Sweetwater District is proud to be the only district in San Diego County that hosts an event of this magnitude in support of our students. We are committed to support our students and our community, ensuring that students have the resources and encouragement needed to thrive.
Together, we can continue to celebrate and elevate Black excellence, fostering an environment where every student can shine. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, and we look forward to seeing the incredible contributions that our scholars will make in our state, community, and world. Thank you to our incredible presenters, panelists, and attendees who made the event so impactful.
A special thanks to the BSU Elders for their invaluable support and presence—you made this event even more meaningful. It is commendable to see so many educators committed to uplifting the next generation.
